WHY THE FIRST TEN MINUTES OF PRACTICE MATTER

The beginning of practice is usually treated as logistics: arrive, warm up, wait for equipment, and eventually start the “real” work. That makes it one of the easiest places to build team habits without stealing time from the sport.

Culture needs repetitions, not just speeches

A team can agree that communication matters and still be poor at communicating. Players can know that inclusion matters and still default to the same partners. Knowing the value is not the same as having the habit. Short activities give players a place to rehearse listening, organizing, recovering, including people and solving problems together.

The activity has to be short enough to earn its place

A team-building activity that takes twenty minutes to explain will disappear from a real practice plan. Five to ten minutes is different. It can replace dead arrival time, become part of the warm-up rhythm, or sit at the front of a session without making the coach feel like they sacrificed the practice.

Choose one behaviour for today

Trying to “build culture” is too broad. Choose the friction you can actually see. Are players talking over one another? Are the same leaders doing everything? Does the group fold when the first attempt fails? Is the energy flat? One short activity can give that specific behaviour a repetition before the sport asks for it under pressure.

Preview first so the coach stays credible

Coaches abandon team-building activities when they feel childish, confusing or disconnected from the group. A preview matters because the coach should know the point, the equipment, the space and the instructions before putting players into it. If it does not fit the team, reject it quickly and choose another one.

Debrief lightly

The activity does not need a ten-minute seminar afterward. One useful question is often enough: “What made that work?” “Where did we lose each other?” “Who helped the group reset?” The goal is to connect the repetition to the team without draining the energy the activity created.
